Thread: Browsing Window 7 system causes instant BSOD
hi guys,
new linux , ubuntu advanced user on windows. on home workgroup network, running ubuntu 10.04.1 on spare pc , windows 7 professional on fast 4 core amd pc. built both pcs myself. win7 system updated maintenance. ubuntu system. win7 desktop system sees , shares files , printers xp sp3 laptop , win 7 home edition netbook... , the ubuntu system ubuntu system can browse , see shares on the xp laptop not window 7 desktop or netbook. both win7 systems can browse , share the ubuntu system. there no current problems anywhere in windows network.
ubuntu gets login loop when trying see win7 systems. before problem gets solved... have problem random bsods (00007f) on windows 7 systems when first try browse network ubuntu. effect instantaneous. click on icon browse network , bingo windows system takes bsod 00007f dump.
appears new in 10.04.1. have loaded 8.04 , 9.10 in past training , and curiosity reasons , never had problem. in past, lost interest , never went deeper. time have dedicated pc in network ubuntu , need linux. trying speed on linux time around because find linux systems appearing in network @ work , need understand how use , network linux.
appreciated.
brian
on win7 box, recomend shutting down apps, , running (as admin terminal)
and perhaps reinstalling samba on ubuntu system.code:sfc.exe /scannow
misconfiguration should never bsod box (be client or server) has bad file, or more serious issue.
login loop, in ubuntu systems /etc/samba/smb.conf
add line globals section:
post these commands ubuntu box:code:client ntlmv2 auth = yes
samba in kind of transition in ubuntu, samba text based server platform, , ubuntu desktop. try think of gui share creation (usershare) kind of add-on enhance text based nature of samba. text based type (which in opinion more sure , stable) configured in /etc/samba/smb.conf. if use gui usershare, system still uses smb.conf, augments per-user information shares. means share created gui online if user logged in, or @ least used to.code:sudo cat /etc/samba/smb.conf sudo net usershare
here community documentation samba, , howto:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/settingupsamba
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=202605
advice whichever approach configuring samba use, pick 1 , try stick it. bad things happen when try mix gui administration text based. if go gui, may want tweak smb.conf, don't create shares in have been created in gui.
other benefit text-based configuration is better understood , supported community. of support given online linux done in terms of commands , settings lines, because gaurenteed work on systems (whereas everyone's desktop different), , because asking volunteers capture, crop, annotate, upload, , embed "point , click" images asking much.
