Suggestion on A4 Margins for a book/magazine
hi guys,
i designing magazine/book journal psychiatric association. called book/magazine because reading long articles running text , few photographs. interior pages black , white , no colour pictures. the layout , design has "serious" trying make more interesting -considering cannot use color inside- while keeping formal style. client want use garamond.
1) size , leading of garamond like? trying adobe garamond pro 11.5 pt 14 pt leading. take in account is people on 40 or 50 years , older reads long articles and complaint magazine small minimal type size.
2) thinks of these margins a4 size? here sample.
margins:
top: 24 mm (0.944 inches)
bottom: 16 mm (0.629 inches)
inside: 16 mm (0.629 inches)
outside: 16 mm (0.629 inches)

body type: stemple garamond lt. (more x-height typography)
size/leading: 12/15 pt
1) 1 column space @ bottom margin footnotes.

2) 2 columns space @ bottom margin footnotes. (the 2 columns have more design features play 1 column central paragraph think).

since nobody else wants start, will.
i'm not heavily book , magazine layout in normal work, references suggest column width should hold in range of 50 70 characters easy reading, , leading highly dependent on font. tall x-height requires more leading short x-height. don't want lines tight reader scans same line twice, , don't want spacing loose, either, same reason.
i favor large margins. accomodate creep during binding, , make easier read content near spine (your alternate layout has not enough inside margin, in opinion) , large outside margin gives reader place grip page without obscuring content or smearing ink.
what headers? publication not use sort of header or footer? you've left no space those...
