Thread: Install Problem: Can't find medium

i pulled out old xps m1710 laptop , fired up. screen read no bootable devices figured hard drive had been erased , better time try out linux.

burned ubuntu 10.04 cd-r , tried boot. got "init error. try passing init= bootarg" searched around on google , tried 1 solution of burning image cd. time used blank dvd.

booted , got purple screen said ubuntu , had ascending red , white lights on it. stay there bit before throwing me busybox , giving me "unable find medium containing live file system" error.

guess since computer old (5-6 years) hard drive died on me, read problem bad cd drive. don't believe it's cd drive since got far installation. i'm debating dropping money new hard drive newegg, want know \you guys think?

other notes:
-i ran dvd on desktop , runs perfectly
-i tried using usb boot laptop doesn't see (even after changing bios boot usb
-i tried 64 bit version , computer said can't support

whenever piece of hardware on blink open , check connections...even remove them , replug. doing see or connections reestablish themselves. easier on desktop but...
