Thread: Installing Grub for Dual Boot

hello everybody. i'm new here , linux. i've installed ubuntu on winxp machine, following instructions @ http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/multiple_os_installation, installing ubuntu 9.04 recommended. went fine except when got installing grub, instructions told me expect this:

-> finish partitioning , write changes disk -> "installing base system" -> ... ->
->"install grub boot loader master boot record?": yes -> continue

  • in step, grub must installed both on mbr (master boot record) locally on partition being installed (in example /dev/sda6). local version chainloaded mbr version. therefore, install grub second time:

-> go -> install grub boot loader on hard disk -> "install grub boot loader master boot record?": no -> device boot loader installation: /dev/sda6 -> continue
but installer never asked me if wanted install grub master boot record--i think did it. , didn't give me chance go , install grub again in local partition.

so, computer starts fine, , can choose os ok. need put grub in local partition? if so, how do it?

tried using grub-install:

user@host:~$ grub-install /dev/sda6
but returned following error:

rm: cannot remove '/boot/grub/stage1' : permission denied
i looked file permissions, after learning how use gparted , messing day, couldn't head around complexities of linux permissions.

can tell me what, if anything, need do, boot-up/chainloader/whatever organized properly?

thanks!

my understanding need grub on master boot record, may not understanding particular installation, if can boot both os's grub installed.
