Thread: I get empty panels, three-quarters of the screen width

i have updated lucid after upgrade gnome panels display empty (no menus, apps, etc.) , extend lhs of screen around three-quarters of screen. happen both top , bottom panels.

if right click on panels, select "properties" , toggle "expand" checkbox (initially on), panels revert should be. no further problems until log off. when log in again, panels blank/three-quarter width.

guessing gnome/x11 config file either corrupted or incompatible. (odd because have upgraded machine without problem.) ideas?
