black psd image prints gray from ID

using cs4 on mac 10.5

 

i provided black-and-white ai image white fills, need whites transparent, opened ai image in ps (rasterizing). deleted white fills, filled black areas 40,40,40,100 , saved .psd. placed file in id , prints gray. id file cmyk, , printed on color laser printer. i've both "exported" file out of id, , printed pdf file. same result.

 

here of options i've tried:

rasterize .ai, .eps , .pdf file in ps (all created ai)

rasterize @ 300, 600 , 1200 dpi

change mode bitmap

change mode greyscale

save ps file .psd

save ps file .eps, chose "transparent whites" (this first choice, image, when placed id, prints grayed out box big x, though, in id's print dialog box, graphics in "output" set "all")

save ps file .pdf (figured, heck!)

 

i made new "black" in id values of 40,40,40,100, , print black, except silly image!

 

is there way this? white fills in original ai file there cover black parts, can't eliminate them in ai... or @ least don't know how to. tried saving new .eps file in ai, choosing transparent whites, white fills still there when placed id.

have tried dragging black swatch on greyscale one?  can colourise greyscale bitmaps in indesign this.
