Thread: Connection to a Hidden Wireless WiFi with Ubuntu 10.04

i needed linux capability installed on toshiba net-book windows 7 starter service unix/linux products in field (ssh system, etc.). needs, decided ubuntu 10.04 installed wubi ideal solution. have been happy decision.

having no problem connecting internet wired lan or open wifi, having kinds of problems connecting hidden home wireless thought vanilla get. linksys using wpa-personal tkip encoding. searching internet got me kinds of gobbledygook editing files in /dev/xxx, etc., , sorts of irrelevant advice. after hacking, prevailed, , following simple explanation (i hope) using existing ubuntu tool. should cover pc installations of recent ubuntu releases.

go top of ubuntu desktop, find network icon (a pizza-slice of concentric circles) next speaker icon. (if you're connected wired lan, icon 2 opposite-pointing arrows) left click , drop-down menu appear. click on "create new wireless network...". dialog box open, , click on "wireless security" , choose "wpa & wpa personal". type in network name , password (passphrase - must @ least 8 characters). click create. box close, , you'll "connection established" message, if you're connected, should go out , buy lottery ticket.

need go , right click network icon , select "edit connections...". open dialog box. click on "wireless" tab, , select network name , click "edit". opens dialog box @ "wireless" tab. mode, select "infrastructure", not default "ad hoc". note biggest hurdle in getting things working. "ad hoc" sounds such nice choice, wrong. next, confirm in ssid correct. leave bssid , mac address blank unless you've set broadcast ssid or have strange pc setup. click on "wireless security" tab, , security select "wpa & wpa2 personal", , enter password (passphrase). if hidden wireless, select "connect automatically". next, click on "ipv4 settings" tab , select "automatic (dhcp)". click "apply".

go , right click network icon , select "edit connections". can delete failed attempts. if checked "connect automatically", should establish connection. if not, left click network icon , connect manually (using "connect hidden wireless network" or other selection).

can add 1 little thing comments?

pass-phrase use when creating wireless connection wireless or network security key router/modem. found on label attached router. indeed 8 characters long , case sensitive. using information instruction leaflet came router. mention because network manager remembers password, good, not inform if have entered wrong one. asks authentication. not good. not happen may not realise reason connection failure due wrong password. found out myself .

regards.
